What happened to Piper?

QUESTION:

What happened to Piper?

ANSWER:

It was December 3rd, 2006. Piper spent most of the day on the bed, staying warm and being a little bit of a grouch when I'd come to pet her and tell her it's a beautiful day outside, go play, etc.

She came around for her dinner, even bopped Nardo on the head when they bumped noses. She always does that when he gets too close. All these years, I've been trying to get them to get along, and it never works.

Still, I try.

She was on the computer table around 23:45 when I was finishing up with my roughcut of the voice track for the Pickle Tales thing to let me know it was bedtime.

I woke up in the middle of the night around 0200 or so. I'm not sure what happened, but Piper was acting strangely, and the next thing I knew she was felling off the bed on to the floor.

I went to the side of the bed, and her back legs were at a weird angle. Her tail was limp, too.

Did she break her back?

My wife was out of town, so I called her and then called a cab to get to the emergency animal clinic.

They looked at Piper, took some x-rays and did blood work.

No spinal damage at all. Weak pulse in the back legs. They think it's an enlarged heart that threw off a clot, and that's got her back half paralyzed.

They've got her on an IV and heperin, but they said this is something that's 50-50.

We went home with plans to come back around 0730 when the overnight clinic closes up to get her up to the main animal hospital

Around 0545 the emergency vet called. Her heart must have thrown off another clot, because it stopped her lungs.

She didn't make it.
